Great interview. I love Tommy's sly dig at urban combatives. Solo pad drills and principles not techniques! Totally agree 👍
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you 🙏
Great video Les! I agree (coming from a competition perspective) the guard should adapt to your needs and strategy. I usually drop my hands if I’m looking for a counter… doesn’t always work 😅 but I find I react quicker and throw quicker shots… but I also like the high guard and cross guards too if I’m putting pressure on. Can’t wait to train and learn from you again! 🫶
Yeah I like to do that too 😀
100%❤❤❤
Thank you 🙏
Nice work as always Les
Thank you 🙏
Now that is some kata bunkai, I never knew!!! Well done
Thank you, glad you like it
I teach that Musubi is the concept of Communication, Unification and Harmonious interaction. The hands together action travelling through the parabolic curve, that i call the Kyokusen or the parabolic curve of control. It is with reference to Kyo and Jutsu. The posture of the feet is a simple physical icon of the total movement at the beginning and end of each Kata. The opinion of my experience of 6 decades of Martial arts. 👍 Ps Musubi in essence is an Aikido concept.
That’s your way, glad it works for you
It looks like sumi gaeshi
Different names for same things, each style and martial arts use different names.
Wth just dance 1989
It’s from a movie
Some hojo undo is a prime example of your point, I think. Anyone who casually trains in the gym today can see the vast improvement in weight lifting technique and our general approach to strength and conditioning today!
For sure, people done what they could with knowledge they had. No we know more and we can do more. Thank you 🙏
Hope it goes well! Love to see Les with friends and smiling!
It’s AI ;)
Hang in there Bro. You have been doing a lot of things and working very hard. Sometimes just taking a break from some things can refresh me. All the Best!
Thank you 🙏
Firstly do you know musubi dachi?
I do, secondly do you know what masters say about kata and execution? Also I mentioned about hands from musubi 😀
I like the video and the various henka on the blocks and wrist locks techniques. But how is it related to musubi dachi when techniques were performed from heiko dachi and kiba dachi?
In description I mentioned it’s a hands part. Also it was in relation to kata.” Do kata exactly, fighting is different matter” masters say
Ura mawashi*
Maybe in your system,
The “strike” or other impact (distraction) cannot be under estimated. For many of my fellow karatika and myself included, we don’t spend enough time and practice on throws. Three or four well practiced throws are better than ten or fifteen throws that we “know”. I still here once in a while: There are No throws in Karate! I have heard Bunkai referred to as “Parlor Tricks”. 🤣😂😰
Yeah I have only couple of throws that I use in competition but like practicing a lot of them. I often hear it’s Judo 😅
Need power 👺. Don't dance like a puppet.👺
Would help if you understand the concept of demonstration 😃 hard thing to grasp but I’m sure you can do it if you try rully rully hard
Machida in UFC did a pretty good job of demonstrating "one punch one kill", but with a mae geri kick. A Shotokan guy! Good stuff Les.
Yeah, he done well, but didn’t kill anyone 😀
Super!
Dziekuje
Seminars promote exponential learning and broaden friendship beyond club and style. Thanks!
Indeed, thank you 🙏
Great advice. Better try and fail than not try at all. Whether it is going professional or just being involved in teaching, it is always worth a try. I started as an assistant instructor already at 15 years old and it has given me a lot of fun and insights into martial arts in the 25 years since then that I would not otherwise have had. Cheers!
Awesome! Thank you 🙏
Fifty threes years ago my wrestling coach impressed that upon me, in a most impressive manner 😅. It is good that Karate is catching up. Although there are still schools that insist that you should never LET that happen 😂. I do believe that you post more videos than anyone I subscribe to. They often have some real jewels of information. Thanks, enjoy the sunshine! ⛩
I got that and most of my applications from my wrestling coach about 20 years ago that changed my view of karate for ever. Thank you 🙏
I'm with you Les! Have a great weekend!!! Keep'em coming!
Thank you 🙏
Love the practicality and the way that you use the shape of this particular kata🙏🏽🥋
Thank you 🙏
on the topic of "McDojo's". I honestly prefere the definition from "McDojoLife" where the school sufferes from one or more of the following: 1) pedophiles/sex offenders 2) Lying about your history: training, rank, fight record etc. 3) unsafe training practices 4) cult like behaviour 5) no touch knockouts, other hockey techniques, or mislabeling techniques. 6) shady business practices. note about #6 - making a profit is NOT shady in itself.but how thye go about it can be an issue. also note, there is nothing in this list that says it can't be dance/kata only to be a real school. Nothing about competing etc. But you DO need to be honest about what is in the corriculum and it's intended purpose. Here's a link to Rob's video on it: ua-cam.com/video/deQJ6jLvnJ8/v-deo.html
Thanks yeah Rob has good definition, and he was on my show 😃 link below ua-cam.com/video/3xP8Xxaewg0/v-deo.htmlfeature=shared
@@lesbubka slowly making my way down your interviews. Good stuff.
Thank you 🙏
Waaaay more legit! Osu!
Thank you 🙏
Good training partners, long warmups and cooldowns. Good stuff!
Yeah it all helps :)
It’s funny, isn’t it… almost everyone writes a Will outlining who they want their money and belongings to go to. Yet nobody in Karate seems to want to write a “karate will” stating that after their death they definitely want a particular person to take over. Maybe they cling to the false hope that their students will get on and share, though I can hardly think of any examples where that has happened.
Yeah, yet even in cases where there was a will (Mas Oyama) there are games and accusations of forgery and lies. It looks like the master can’t win 😃
101%
Thank you 🙏
Bowing was common in Colonial America, before the American Revolution. It served some of the same purposes as in Asia. After the Revolution it died out as being less "democratic" than handshakes.
Interesting, thank you 🙏
I train Okinawan Shorin Ryu karate but started in Japanese Karate. In my current style Osu is frowned upon but I love the spirit represented by Osu and use it a lot. I think most Karate practitioners are way too attached to certain outdated traditions viewing them as sacred laws. Many of them are like cosplayers who pretend that they are Japanese or Okinawan and fear change more than anything (except for maybe sparring). Karate is a treasure you receive, and I believe you must make it your own and apply it to your own life and way of thinking. Osu and thanks for the videos I really enjoy them.
I agree
OK
Ok
Amazing chat - thoroughly enjoyed the video; many thanks 🥋
Thank you 🙏 we have loads more interviews on our podcast Anxious Black Belt 🥋
I understand, a bit of explanation would help those of less experience
There’s clip out today, explaining, in the nut shell you spar with different objectives one punches but can’t grab other can’t punch
Sensei 😊

I see person who probably have some Insecurities, we have a mental health programme that I would like to invite you to, It might help you process that feelings.
Teachers need to give a little speech so everyone knows what to do. Escalation is really stupid and causes injuries.
It’s natural it takes experience to get control of it 😃
Control, control, control... Good stuff!
Thank you 🙏
Recall going through my belts and fat guys with many stripes on they're belts you couldn't count saying your knee needs to be further this way, your hip is too far that way, your wrist needs to be more like this, then you these guys perform you realise they are not quite all that. Agreed, subbed.
Thank you 🙏 yeah there’s still a lot teachers like that.
@@lesbubka , I know, and they are on the increase, and they're ego's mate.
Unfortunately karate helps to inflate those.
Bunkai always just ends up being judo/jujutsu anyway- why not just learn Judo and drop karate kata altogether?
Because in judo you don’t punch, karate grappling and joint locks differ from ju jitsu, ju jitsu specialises in control, karate joint lock focus on setting up for strike if that makes sense.
@@lesbubka that does makes sense, but you don't really learn the actual fundamentals of the throws/locks training it in karate kata, sure it's fun to unlock what it could be but you're still not going to be able to do it... If that makes sense?
It depends what karate you do, I like karate and karate throws.
Thank you for sharing this podcast. Sensei Stephen is an amazing individual and karate teacher. I’ve known him for over 30 years and he has been a mentor and friend for as long although for the last couple of decades I’ve moved overseas and consequently trained primarily with other teachers.
Thank you 🙏
Thanks for sharing. This is very interesting talk and lots of truths spoken by Simon Sensei.
Thank you for listening, much appreciated
Really enjoyed that chaps 👍🏻 🥋

Thanks for the mention! Hope the coffee was good! MKs are making my morning coffee lots better.
Thank you!
"We are our worst critic, worst enemy"...so TRUE.
At least that’s the case for me 😂
I believe, to some degree it is a good thing because it helps to motivate us to learn more.
I can see that, definitely there is room for learning.
Wonderful! Thanks Gents.
Pleasure thank you
You folks have SO MUCH FUN with your seminars. No doubt about value.
Thanks yeah UK is great place to be for seminars
